I am troubled about the California Farook and Malik terror attack. The House Homeland Security Committee’s Rep. Jim Langevin (D-RI) says, “Everyone’s asking the same questions about how it is that law enforcement didn’t know, or intelligence officials didn’t know.”
I am very troubled after a friend shared with me information that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stopped surveillance that might have identified the California terrorists. DHS whistleblower Philip Haney discusses an investigation he was involved with that might have stopped the San Bernardino jihad attack. He was involved in investigations that took six years to develop and encompassed over 1,200 law-enforcement actions related to the investigation. He received a commendation letter for identifying 300 terrorists. The investigation had the full endorsement of the entire management structure of his agency.
Mr. Haney noticed that many members of a Salafist Muslim fundamentalist group called Tablighi Jamaat were entering the United States on the same visa waiver program Malik used and were proceeding to locations known to be part of the extremist networks he had been piecing together. Some of the individuals they were investigating visited the same mosque that Farook attended. Had the investigation been allowed to continue Farook and Malik’s terror connections might have become known.
The investigation was shut down by DHS’s Civil Rights and Civil Liberties section, and the State Department because of its focus. His superiors actually erased some of his files pertinent to the case. They said his investigation was problematic because it profiled Muslim groups. After he complained, he was removed from his duties and they revoked his security clearance.
You can listen to Megyn Kelly’s interview with Philip Haney by internet searching “Whistleblower: DHS Pulled Plug on Surveillance That Could’ve ID’ed CA Terrorists” and read a more extensive interview at “Exclusive–DHS Whistleblower Philip Haney: P.C. Killed Investigation That Might Have Stopped San Bernardino Attack.”
I can’t find where ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC or MSNBC has covered this story, which is disturbing. There are similar stories they also don’t report. Is this a literally fatal form of political correctness or is political correctness simply being used to accomplish some other objectives? American lives seem to be expendable to these objectives.
On a much bigger scale, we are losing this war because we appear to be afraid or unable to confront it. When we are afraid or unable to recognize those who seek our destruction, how do we ever expect to successfully identify and overcome them? It’s like we are hearing scary sounds in the night and hiding from them. In a National Defense University speech Newt Gingrich asks some questions our nation should have resolved before the Afghanistan War. Internet search for, “Newt Gingrich: New Words for a New World.” We should be willing to think before we ask our soldiers to die for us.
